Fire crews are battling a blaze at a waste facility in Fife.

Nine fire appliances were dispatched to the scene of the fire at Ladybank waste facility at about 1.35pm on Tuesday.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said a “large area of landfill waste” at the facility is “well alight”.

There are no reports of casualties.

Images posted on social media showed a large plume of grey smoke rising into the sky above the facility.

One user, David Henry, posted a video of himself in front of the blaze, where he explains there looks to have been a “substantial fire” at the site.

He goes on: “It seems to be dying down now, but it was literally like a nuclear explosion had gone off.”

Police have closed the A92 between Melville Lodges and Ladybank, and the B937 at Eden Bridge to the A91, with motorists being advised to avoid the area.

In a statement, Fife Council said: “The site will be closed for the time being and we will keep customers updated here on service disruptions and when we expect to be able to reopen.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s (SFRS) east control room said they were still in attendance as of 10.45pm on Tuesday night.

A statement on the force’s website adds: “Twelve fire appliances are currently tackling a fire at a landfill site near Ladybank, Fife, after the alarm was raised at 1.35pm on Tuesday May 12.

“The fire was spread over approximately 200m by 300m of landfill waste.

“Nearby residents are asked to close windows and doors as a precaution.

“Motorists are advised to find alternative routes.”
