New Aberdeen South MP Douglas Lumsden has declared the “war on oil and gas must end” as he was sworn in to the House of Commons.

The Tory politician hit out at both the Labour Government at Westminster and the SNP administration in Edinburgh, accusing them of a lack of support for the sector.

But he said that his by-election success, capturing the seat from the SNP, had sent the “loudest possible message to Labour and SNP governments that their war on oil and gas must end”.

The Tory, who will now give up his seat at the Scottish Parliament, said he was “honoured” to have been officially sworn in as the new MP for Aberdeen South.

Also sworn in as an MP was Labour’s Andy Burnham, who is now expected to be the next prime minister after Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation earlier on Monday.

With Mr Lumsden saying it was “increasingly likely” that Mr Burnham will take over the job, he urged him he must “get Britain drilling again”.

Mr Lumsden continued: “The oil and gas industry has been shamefully abandoned by SNP and Labour politicians.

“As Aberdeen South’s MP I will never stop championing oil and gas workers.

“We simply cannot continue losing 1,000 jobs a month from the sector.

“The rapid decline in the North Sea is having a devastating impact across the city of Aberdeen, with businesses being hit hard by the huge job losses and lack of investment.

“I urgently want to reverse this situation and ensure that Aberdeen is thriving, rather than barely surviving.”
